Lived Experience is Expertise – the importance of Youth and Caregiver Partnership

Partnering with youth and caregivers with lived experience in all aspects and all phases of our research is fundamental to our approach to improving outcomes.

We believe that mental health research aimed at improving care for children and youth must be shaped by youth with lived experience and the caregivers who support them. They offer insights and priorities that clinicians and researchers alone cannot define. The involvement of those with lived experience as research partners ensures that our approaches to outcome selection and measurement is scientifically rigorous, ethically grounded, and practically relevant.

Knowing that the tools we used to measure the outcomes we track in mental health conditions is important. We follow the COSMIN framework to evaluate the outcome measurement instruments, including PROMs (patient-reported outcome measures), commonly used to measure anxiety depression in children and youth.
